LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Del Valle & Drkrm. Gallery present Performance: A Photographic Exhibition featuring the work of Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, on view January 20 - February 24, 2007. The Del Valle Archive and Drkrm Gallery have assembled a collection of rare and unseen photographs from PERFORMANCE (1970) and THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (1976), two legendary films directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg. Now recognized as classics, both films were, upon their release, met with a hostile critical reception that rejected their dazzling, kaleidoscopic use of montage as well as a daring mixture of sadism and eros -- the juxtaposition of images of sex and violence. Both films starred famous British rock stars, Mick Jagger in Performance and David Bowie in The Man Who Fell To Earth. We pay tribute to the boldness of directors Cammell and Roeg with this exhibition of images from their greatest works, whose daring and strangeness remain undiminished to this day.

The show will consist of 20+ photographs, none of which have been shown in a gallery setting, most never seen by the public. Though there were six years between the two films, the photos share a strikingly similar quality; both depicted the collision of alien worlds that featured Jagger and Bowie as odd, androgynous, reclusive yet brilliant misanthropes. This exhibit will also feature prints of Cecil Beaton’s exotic vision of rock icon Mick Jagger taken in 1968 on the set of Performance.

Donald Cammell, whose death by suicide in 1996 was the culmination of an enigmatic and mysterious film career, wrote and co-directed Performance with Nicolas Roeg in the late 1960s. Although Cammell’s career was elusive after Performance, he directed only three more features. Nicolas Roeg went on to direct several important films of the 1970s; the acknowledged classics Walkabout (1971), Don’t Look Now (1973), and Bad Timing (1980).

David Del Valle is a nationally known journalist, columnist, film historian, radio and television commentator and oversees The Del Valle Archive; a collection of thousands of still photographs, artwork and ephemera dealing with the horror/fantasy/sci-fi and cult movie genres.

Drkrm. Gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to the display and survey of popular cultural images, fine art photography, cutting edge and alternative photographic processes. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm.
