NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans announced the appointment of Dr. Andrea Andersson as its new Chief Curator of Visual Arts. A native New Orleanian, Andersson returns to New Orleans from New York, where she has been based since 2001.
"We are pleased to welcome a curator of Andrea's skill and intelligence to the CAC family. To have her join us at such a critical time in our re-imagining of the seminal role that the CAC has played in the development of the appetite for contemporary art in New Orleans is a timely blessing. All of us at the CAC are looking forward to working with her and making her a critical part of the New Orleans community." -Neil A. Barclay, Director and CEO Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans
An independent curator with a focus on interdisciplinary and contemporary art, Andersson has organized and toured exhibitions across North America to museums that include-among others- the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver), the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, The Power Plant (Toronto, Ontario) and Yale Union (Portland, Oregon). A graduate of Stanford and Columbia Universities, she has taught at NYU and Barnard College. As a leading scholar in the field of interdisciplinary artistic practice, her writing has appeared in scholarly journals and catalogues. Andersson's book, Postscript: Writing After Conceptual Art, is forthcoming from the University of Toronto Press (co-imprinted by the MCA Denver). She will return to New Orleans as the new Chief Curator of Visual Arts for the CAC in January, 2015.
"As a native of New Orleans, I assume this position with great pride of place, but also with a sense of responsibility. I return to this city at an important moment in the history of its visual arts. I could not be more spirited about the course CAC Director Neil Barclay has charted, nor for the company he has banded together through shared ambition. I am thrilled to join the CAC during this time of development." -Dr. Andrea Andersson
