Shown here is Andy Warhols Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) (1984). Warhol created his own rendition of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" as a part of a series intended to give a "Pop" twist to the icons of the Italian Renaissance. Rather than depicting a larger portion of the original composition, Warhol focuses instead on Venuss head, underscoring the sensual nature of the subject by portraying her hair flowing in the wind. Although Warhol moved on to other historical sources in his subsequent series, including works by Leonardo da Vinci and Paolo Uccello, 'Birth of Venus' remains the most desirable of the group. Warhol created four different versions bestowing celebrity status on Venus, the Roman goddess of love. As with his Marilyn series, Warhol creates black, white, pink and yellow images, bringing into question the ancient ideals of female beauty as they relate to beauty in this contemporary age of diversity. The present example is one of five printer's proofs from a larger edition of 70 and has an estimate of US$16,000-18,000.
