SELECT Art Fair NYC announces highlights
One entire floor of SELECT will be solely for Brooklyn based galleries.

NEW YORK, NY.- During SELECT Art Fair NYC, May 14- 17th 2015, performance artist Millie Brown will debut "Blinded by the Light". A long durational performance piece presented in partnership with the Marina Abramović institute and FRIEDE & CO.

BLINDED BY LIGHT:
Over the course of four days, Millie Brown will immerse herself in a room of light and looping sound, while grains of sand gradually fall onto her head and body until she is completely covered. The performance will result in Brown buried in a pyramid of sand, physically marking time. Brown explores elements of stillness, time, and meditation in this work, while inviting the public to share moments of deep concentration. Through four cycles of the sun, Brown will continuously submerse herself in light, allowing her body and mind to absorb its energy in all forms: physically, sonically, and symbolically. Focusing on the actual sound of the sun, she aims to transcend into a state of pure light.

Artist Lisa Dillon has created Allogrooming Lounge II for you beautification and edification. Come experience our one of a kind art spa, get groomed, and experience your own zen moment at SELECT.

Allogrooming Lounge II:
Primates spend up to 20% of their time on social grooming practices known as allogrooming. Humans have evolved to develop relations similarly. Due to dramatic shifts in social norms that today’s environ requires, we are increasingly physically isolated and experience touch-deprivation. AL II provides a context to connect through social grooming activities in an experiment that aims to enrich local community and shedding light on human behavior.

Brian Andrew Whiteley presents his "Mythical Bigfoot (A Must See)"
Artist and Entomologist Brian Andrew Whiteley has spent years tracking the elusive Bigfoot and we are happy to say that he has finally captured him! He was tranquilized in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies and is currently being transported from Canada to SELECT. This is a once in a life time chance to come into contact with ones of the worlds most mythical creatures!

Rebecca Goyette's "Dentata Umbrella Lounge"
Rebecca Goyette's hybrid, multimedia practice that includes video, performance, sculpture and 2-D work explores the humor of sexuality and human nature through art. For Goyette, sex is a gateway to the rich territory of psychology and human interaction. Her schematic Lobsta Porn video series and related works explore sexual fantasy scenarios through people playacting the magical sex lives of lobsters and the occasional oddball octopus. Spawned from this body of underwater eroticism, Dentata Umbrella Lounge is a ritualized gathering space beneath a spread of tentacles and octopussy dentata.

In addressing heterosexual sex, Camille Paglia suggested in "Sexual Personae," "The toothed vagina is no sexist hallucination: every penis is made less in every vagina, just as mankind, male and female, is devoured by mother nature."

Rebecca Goyette received a BFA from RISD and an MFA from SVA. She has exhibited widely in NYC and internationally, including solo shows at Arts+Leisure, NYC, Freight+Volume, NYC, Airplane Gallery, NYC, NY Studio Gallery, NYC, Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, NJ and Galerie X, Istanbul, Turkey. She completed residencies at DNA Summer Residency, Provincetown, MA, Offshore Project, Kardamyli, Greece, Greenwich House Pottery, NYC and Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, NY.

Alit Contemporary presents Zuz’s installation "Start of Spring, New York" 2015 (rooftop)
Start of Spring, 2015 is a site specific installation created by the contemporary artist Zuz as an exploration of the present moment. The painted silk sculpture has been executed in anticipation of SELECT fair as an exploration of a moment in the beginning of spring in New York City, 2015. Drawn intuitively onto silk fabric, the painted patterns take the viewer on a visual journey that twists and turns as it moves across the fabric in a dynamic yet contained form. The luxurious yet indefinite qualities of the fabric are used to symbolize the nature of the present time, molded specifically to the occasion. Akin to the painted patterns, the fabric’s grooves and hollows are left to be interpreted by the viewer and have been designed to inspire individual reflection as a way to be present.
