NEW YORK, NY.- Posters have charted the course of political movements, marketed products, disseminated propaganda, branded films, and inspired revolutions. They are iconic, powerful, and ubiquitous, bridging the worlds of art and design on every street corner. Yet with hundreds of cultural institutions in New York City, none have ever been dedicated to posters until now. Poster House, due to open in late 2018, will present lively, rotating exhibitions of international posters from all time periods and cultures, exploring how this ephemeral medium came to become the peoples art.
Poster House is dedicated to presenting the impact, culture, and design of posters, both as historical documents and methods of contemporary visual communication. Through temporary exhibitions, a growing permanent collection, and a rich selection of public programs, Poster House will explore the enormous impact of posters on society and culture, and how they continue to influence human behavior in the 21st Century.
The institution will move into its permanent home at 119 W. 23rd St., which formerly housed TekServe, in the fall of 2018 after a renovation. In the interim, the space will host occasional pop-up exhibitions, beginning this September with the month-long Gone Tomorrow.
Gone Tomorrow will feature posters, handbills, signs, and ephemera from iconic New York venues that once made up the fabric of the citys history but have since closed their doors. The exhibition is a nod to the departure of long-time tenant TekServe, and an opportunity for visitors to explore the raw space before its renovation.
Poster House will offer a number of resources, amenities, and attractions to New Yorkers and visitors alike. Its permanent collection will be an important resource for those interested in design, history, advertising, and typography, and temporary exhibitions will introduce audiences on a diverse array of subjects in culture and history. Poster House will also feature a screening room, gift shop, a cafe, and an on-site preservation facility.
Poster House is led by President Val Crosswhite and Director Julia Knight, who was most recently Director at apexart. Angelina Lippert will serve as Chief Curator. Lippert joined Poster House from Rennerts Gallery, where she was Editor-in-Chief and Gallery Director.
Poster Houses advisory board includes Elizabeth Guffey, Professor of Art and Design History, SUNY Purchase; Steven Heller, author, editor, and Co-founder and Co-chair of MFA Designer as Author Program, SVA; Nicholas Lowry, President, Swann Galleries; Ellen Lupton, Director, Graphic Design MFA, MICA and Curator of Contemporary Design, Cooper Hewitt; Chad Phillips, Director of Merchandising, Brooklyn Museum; Tim Rodgers, Director, The Wolfsonian-FIU; Paula Scher, Partner, Pentagram; and Alexander Tochilovsky, Curator, Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography, Cooper Union.
