SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- SF Camerawork, San Francisco's premier alternative venue for photography, will hold its annual fundraising auction on Saturday, October 28, 2017, benefitting the non-profit organization's celebrated exhibitions, publications, and programs dedicated to emerging artists and experimental directions in the photographic arts.

This signature event--now in its 38th year and a favorite among serious photography collectors nationwide--will feature 90 exceptional, highly curated lots representing a range of work by both emerging and internationally distinguished artists, including Richard Misrach, Walker Evans, Imogen Cunningham, Danny Lyon, Herb Ritts, Erica Deeman, Lucas Foglia, Joel Meyerowitz, and Elinor Carucci, to name a few.

"This year's sale presents a strong mix of classic 20th century works with cutting-edge contemporary photography from national and international artists," says Heather Snider, Executive Director of SF Camerawork.

Among many highlights of the live auction will be new work by well known photographers such as Richard Misrach, Imogen Cunningham alongside emerging new talents such as Doug Fogelson and Farrah Karapetian. SF Camerawork is well known for vetting tomorrow's up and coming art stars alongside of classic, "history of photography" jewels.

A special feature of this year's auction is a collection of iconic photographs featuring musicians, including Michael Jang's iconic backstage shot of David Bowie, Herb Ritts portrait of Prince, Baron Wolfman's photograph of Mick Jagger, and other renowned photographs of Bob Dylan, Run DMC, and Belle and Sebastian, along with a stunning photogram of a drum set by Farrah Karapetian.

Danny Lyon's Defeated Demo Driver is also among this year's offerings. A photographer, filmmaker, and writer, Lyon has documented the lives of individuals on the social and cultural margins over the past five decades. Writer Loring Knoblauch saw this photograph in a 2009 New York Times feature on Lyon and commented: "The targets painted on the door, the chain and duct tape holding the door shut, the skull tattoo on his wrist, the mashed up car in the background, and his dejected stare all come together to make a memorable image." featured in the New York Times in 2009, and in the collection of the LACMA, Other projects have included photographing biker subcultures, exploring the lives of individuals in prison, and documenting the architectural transformation of Lower Manhattan.

Led by auctioneer Rick Wester of Rick Wester Fine Art, New York, the evening will offer both live and silent auctions, as well as bountiful cocktails, wine, gourmet food, and for the second year in a row a special "Curator Picks" cocktail reception and in-gallery talk led by SFMOMA photography curator emeritus and field expert Sandra S. Phillips, held at SF Camerawork on Thursday, October 26.

Featured artworks will be on display prior to the auction from Saturday, October 21 through Friday, October 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment at SF Camerawork. The auction preview exhibition is free and open to the public.

A fully illustrated catalogue of auction items will be available both online and in print by September 27. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Online and absentee bidding will be available. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; bidding begins at 7 p.m.
