LOS ANGELES, CA.- This October, Bonhams will present a West Coast series of curated sales, offering lots from Contemporary Art, Prints & Multiples, and Design together for the first time. More than 440 pieces will be on view from October 20 to 24 alongside highlights from upcoming sales of Latin American and Contemporary Art before going under the hammer. The preview will span both Bonhams buildings on the historic Sunset Blvd, including the newly renovated contemporary galleries at 7575 West Sunset Blvd. and its main auction and gallery space at 7601 West Sunset Blvd.

Prints & Multiples
Highlights from the October 24 Prints & Multiples sale at 10:00 PDT span works by quintessential artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, ten lots by Andy Warhol, as well as two important Richard Diebenkorn works, and pieces by contemporary icons David Hockney and Wayne Thiebaud.

Made in California: Contemporary Art
Works by Los Angeles legends will lead this season’s Made in California: Contemporary Art auction on October 25 at 10:00 PDT, including a large-scale glass installation Water Wall by De Wain Valentine, a Verifax collage from Wallace Berman, and two monumental Joan Brown paintings, one from her abstract expression period from 1958, the other from her Dancer series in the 1970s.

Notable owners of several contemporary artworks being offered across the sales include an early slip and glazed Peter Voulkos vase from the estate of fashion designer James Galanos, a Peter Stroud piece from the collection of LACMA Curator Emeritus Maurice Tuchman, and an Alex Katz painting from the collection of LACMA’s first Decorative Arts curator William Osmun.

The Mid-C: Contemporary Art + Design
The October sale series will also mark the debut of The Mid-C: Contemporary Art + Design on October 25 at 13:00 PDT. This new auction will focus on artistic practices in fine art and design that emerged during the mid-20th century, a time of extraordinary upheaval and innovation in art production that saw the emergence of art movements such as abstract expressionism, op art, pop art and photorealism.

Top lots include an Andy Warhol Dollar Sign screen print, a linear geometric abstraction by celebrated Op artist Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Inverted Q from conceptual icon Claes Oldenburg. The Design sale will feature an exceptional 22-piece collection of furniture masterworks by Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier.

In addition, an important selection of furniture and objects from the Monterey Museum of Art, originally from the historic Work family residence known as La Mirada, will be sold to benefit the museum’s fund. The pieces include custom-designed works by Old Hollywood’s leading interior designer, William (Billy) Haines, as well as custom furnishings and antique furniture that came from famous Monterey decorator, Frances Elkins. La Mirada was known as a grand entertaining home where famous celebrities and luminaries gathered for events in the mid-20th century, and the museum has since used this historic home for special events and exhibition space.

Latin American Preview Highlights
Following the landmark exhibition, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, at the Getty, Bonhams is proud to include a curated selection of Latin American Art highlights during the October 20-24 preview in Los Angeles. These works will be offered across various sales this season, including the Post-War & Contemporary Art and Impressionist & Modern Art sales, to give the works a more up-to-date global context and a more inclusive timeline of global artistic production from the last century. Highlights to be exhibited include works by Diego Rivera from the Collection of Dean and Jeanne Martin, paintings by Carlos Mérida, a mythological and urban landscape from Carlos Almaraz, a 14 foot “weaving wall” by Colombian artist Olga de Amaral, and two works by Fernando Botero.
