Marian Goodman Gallery appoints Philipp Kaiser as Chief Executive Director of Artists and Programs
Kaiser has led museum institutions and curated groundbreaking exhibitions in Europe and the United States over the past twenty years.

NEW YORK, NY.- Marian Goodman Gallery announced that art historian and curator Philipp Kaiser has been named as Chief Executive Director of Artists and Programs at Marian Goodman Galleries.   In this newly established position, Kaiser will oversee programming for the gallery’s three spaces internationally, in New York, Paris and London.  This will include the development of special exhibition projects for each space and directing the gallery’s overall larger strategic mission with artists and museums.  In this creative leadership role, Philipp will work in tandem with founder Marian Goodman to support and further the extraordinary enterprise created over forty years ago.

Founder Marian Goodman, said, “I am delighted and honored to welcome Philipp to the Gallery and greatly look forward to him sharing with us the benefits of his vast experience as museum director over these past many years.”

Kaiser has led museum institutions and curated groundbreaking exhibitions in Europe and the United States over the past twenty years. Previously, he was Director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, where his achievements included a complete re-installation of the museum’s renowned permanent collection as well as special exhibitions and public art projects with artists Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, and Gerhard Richter, among others. Prior to his directorship, Kaiser was Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. At MOCA, he was recognized for his scholarship in the art of the 1960s and 1970s with such exhibitions as Index: Conceptualism in California and Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974, the first major survey of historic land art practices worldwide, to name a few.  During this time, he also organized a Jack Goldstein retrospective, which traveled to The Jewish Museum in New York.

Recently, as an independent curator based in Los Angeles, Kaiser has organized inaugural special exhibitions for The Broad and the Marciano Art Foundation with, respectively, artists Cindy Sherman and Jim Shaw. At the Getty Research Institute, he co-curated Harald Szeemann: Museum of Obsessions, which is currently on tour in Germany and Italy. And in 2016 Kaiser was the first curator appointed to organize the Swiss Pavilion for the 57th Venice Biennale. Entitled Women of Venice, the Swiss Pavilion exhibition featured commissions by artists Carol Bove and Hubbard/Birchler. Kaiser’s career began in his native Switzerland, where he was head of contemporary art at the Kunstmuseum Basel. His writings have appeared in a wide range of international publications and magazines and he holds a doctorate from the University of Basel.

On joining the gallery and his Chief Executive Director role, Kaiser said, “Marian is one of the field’s greatest advocates of contemporary art and artists. Throughout its storied history, Marian has provided an innovative and supportive home for artists, historians, and curators alike, fostering a critical transatlantic, and more recently, worldwide dialogue. Having worked closely with many of the gallery’s artists, I am thrilled to partner with Marian and her exceptional team of Executive Directors in New York, Leslie Nolen, Rose Lord, Jessie Washburne-Harris, Emily-Jane Kirwan, Junette Teng, and Andrew Leslie Heyward in London and Paris.”

Kaiser assumes his duties in February 2019.
