HONG KONG.- Over the Influence announced Hanging / Hong Kong / 2020 a solo exhibition of new Alias and Rubikcubist works by the internationally renowned French artist known as Invader.

The exhibition will feature his iconic mosaics alongside a series of ‘RubikMasterpieces’ inspired by important paintings throughout history. Hanging / Hong Kong / 2020 will be open from 10 July 2020 and remain on view through 08 August 2020. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, 09 July, from 6 to 8 PM.

Widely regarded as one of the most important and influential contemporary urban artists of his generation, Invader has consistently challenged convention. Bursting into the scene in 1998, he quickly gained popularity worldwide for his ‘invasions’ that use guerilla tactics to place pixelated video game characters and pop culture archetypes comprised of square ceramic tiles in highly visible yet often just out of reach spaces. Each of his idiosyncratic mosaics is one of many fragments of a sprawling and monumental, long-term, global installation which creates a dialogue within the city and its inhabitants.

Parallel to Invader’s public art has always been the artwork he makes for galleries and institutions. Hanging / Hong Kong / 2020 is an exhibition focused on two prominent mediums from Invader’s “white cube” practice – his mosaic Aliases and his Rubikcubist series.

Alias artworks are unique replicas of the mosaics made on the streets. Whereas Space Invaders in public areas are unsigned works created for public enjoyment outside gallery and museum spaces, their Aliases are made to be hung indoors, signed by the artist, and accompanied by Identity Cards showing a photo of the mosaic in situ along with information about the original work. Only one alias is created per every piece on the street. Hanging / Hong Kong / 2020 brings together 16 new Aliases from in situ works in Dijon, Djerba, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Malaga, Paris, Ravenna, and Versailles.

Alongside the Aliases, will be 5 new Rubikcubist artworks - a style of mosaic art developed by the artist in 2005 characterized by the use of Rubik’s cubes in various configurations to create six-color low-res images. Based off of historical paintings by masters Paul Gaugin, Vincent Van Gogh, and Édouard Manet, the new ‘RubikMaterpieces’ are a continuation of the series that was started by the artist with “Rubik Mona Lisa” in 2005.

Invader was born in Paris, France in 1969. He studied at La Sorbonne University and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He has been exhibited in Museums and Foundations around the world including le Musée en Herbe, Paris, France; HOCA Foundation, Hong Kong; Museums Quartier, Vienna, Austria; MOCA, Los Angeles, CA, USA; Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego, San Diego, CA, USA; Daejeon Museum of Arts, Daejeon, South Korea; Musée Ingres, Montauban, France; Borusan Center for Culture and Arts, Istanbul, Turkey; Mjelby Konstgard Museum, Halmstad, Sweden; and the Biennale d’Art Contemporain, Lyon, France; MAR, Ravenna, Italy; Pori Art Museum, Pori, Finland ; MASP, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Centre pour l’image contemporaine, Genève, Swiss.
