SOUTHAMPTON, NY.- Phillips announced Abstract by Nature, Paintings from the 1950s to the Present, an exhibition at Phillips Southampton from 7 August-6 September. Inspired by nature, the works presented are an exploration of the purity of color and form in American abstraction from the 1950s Post-War era all the way up to its contemporary iterations. The exhibition includes works from Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Post-War masters such as Jules Olitski, Hans Hoffman, Adolph Gottlieb and Kenneth Noland. It also aims to showcase their eventual influence on the abstract practices of contemporary artists, such as Mark Grotjahn, Jennifer Guidi and Petra Cortright. Works included in the exhibition will be offered through both Phillips’ private sales platform and at auction in New York in Fall 2021.

On display alongside Abstract by Nature will be the first brick-and-mortar pop-up for The Invisible Collection, the state-of-the art digital platform that champions handcrafted couture furniture and accessories from the world’s best designers. For the first time, they will bring this shoppable concept to American shores for design enthusiasts and collectors alike.  The pop-up will offer contemporary products from a talent pool of veteran and emerging designers, many of which are on Architectural Digest’s 100 (AD100) list. Phillips’ gallery will be outfitted with a mélange of coveted furnishings available for purchase from the likes of CSLB Studio, Damien Langlois-Meurinne, Juliana Lima, Pinto, Kelly Behun, Emmanuelle Simon, Louise Liljencrantz, Pierre Yovanovitch, Osanna Visconti, Michel & Daniel Bismut, Charles Zana and Studio Parisien.

Robert Manley, Phillips’ Co-Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, said, “We are proud to partner with The Invisible Collection in presenting this unique dual-exhibition to the vibrant collecting community of the Hamptons. At Phillips, we have long sought to break down the barriers between collecting categories, showcasing exceptional 21st century design alongside the iconic blue-chip names of Post-War and Contemporary art and celebrating their equally important contributions to the art historical canon.”

Zaoui and Dubern-Mallevays, Co-Founders of The Invisible Collection, commented, “After a lengthy travel ban, it feels extra-special to transform the historic Phillips space into a welcoming home in the U.S. for design aficionados with some of our best pieces. We’re excited to create conversations between collectors and connoisseurs amongst these precious shoppable items. It’s truly a full circle moment as Phillips was one of the first auction houses to recognize the value of collectable contemporary design and promoting the great European tradition of arts décoratifs is still relevant today.”

Also on view at Phillips Southampton will be a selection of paintings from the acclaimed artist James Prosek. Dubbed the “Audubon of the fishing world” by The New York Times, Prosek has traveled the globe in pursuit of his subject matter, has published over a dozen books, and has exhibited his art globally at institutions such as The Yale University Art Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
