A Famille Verte Porcelain Figure of Guanyin. Price Realized: $200,000.

CHICAGO, IL.- On September 23 to 25, Hindman Auctions’ Asian Art sales realized more than $2.1 across three auctions. The September 23rd Asian Works of Art sale achieved extraordinary prices across multiple sessions, ultimately realizing $1,656,188. The September 24th Japanese Works of Art auction and the September 25th Asian Works of Art Online auction also saw strong engagement and competitive bidding, realizing $164,188 and $280,375, respectively. Offerings ranged from Asian lacquer and pottery wares to late 19th through early 20th century precious stone carvings and paintings. Property from the Estate of Donna Wasserstrom, (Cleveland, Ohio), the Estate of Anthony D'Attilio (San Diego, California), the Estate of Robert Forest Coman (Scottsdale, Arizona) and a Private Chicago Collector saw remarkable results.

Fantastic bidding engagement was seen in the September 23rd Asian Works of Art auction. The top lot of the sale was a 19th century Famille Verte Porcelain Figure of Guanyin (lot 66), which soared past its presale estimate of $4,000-6,000 to sell for $200,000.

Additional highlights included the sale of Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra (The Great Wisdom Sutra), Daihannyaharamitta-kyō, Volume 334 (lot 90), which exceeded its presale estimate and realized $162,500. This is an extremely rare handwritten manuscript copy of scriptures translated and delivered by Xuanzang, written in Japan during the Nara period. A bronze figure of seated Guanyin (lot 342) also saw tremendous interest and sold for $87,500. A Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze figure of seated Tara (lot 344) sold for $34,375 against a presale estimate of $6,000-8,000.

Jade objects saw incredible bidding activity in the September 23rd auction. Examples include a fine semi-translucent green jadeite censer and cover (lot 154), which sold for over ten times its presale estimate to achieve $102,500. The squat censer body is supported on three low animal mask-form legs, and flanked with further masks carved in relief and suspending large rings as handles. A pair of finely carved celadon jade cylindrical parfumiers (lot 142) climbed past its presale estimate of $30,000-$50,000 and sold for $90,000. Each parfumier shows scholars and their attendants in rocky mountainous scenes. Other standout jade lots included a mottled green jadeite marriage bowl (lot 153), which realized $20,000, more than six times its presale estimate; an apple green and white jadeite 'Buddha's Hand Citron and Insects' brush washer (lot 136) from the late Qing Dynasty, which sold for over eight times its presale estimate and realized $16,250, and a carved white jade ‘Chilong’ vase, which exceeded its estimate and sold for $12,500.

Highlights of the September 24th Japanese Works of Art sale included a late 19th century large mixed-metal inset wall panel (lot 643), which achieved a top price of $17,500 and a patinated-bronze okimono of a cockerel (lot 641), which realized $8,750. Samurai swords were also among top lots such as one with a blade signed (Kikumon) Nihon Kaji Sosho Iga No Kami Fujiwara Kinmichi (lot 650), which exceeded its presale estimate of $2,000-3,000 to sell for $4,375.

Hindman’s September 25th Asian Works of Art Online sale was also a great success, with outstanding results achieved for ceramics, jade and bronze lots. Top lots included a set of two Chinese porcelain vases (lot 857) – one decorated with peach branches within circular reserves, the second a celadon glazed vase – which skyrocketed past its estimate to achieve $21,250. A Chinese Carved celadon jade bell (lot 956) sold for $20,000, far above its presale estimate, and two Asian bronze figures (lot 1159) realized $12,500. A Thai gilt decorated bronze figure of seated Buddha (lot 1176) sold for a strong price of $10,000.
