NEW YORK, NY.- James-Keith Brown, President of the New Museum’s Board of Trustees, and Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum, today announced the appointment of three new members to the Board of Trustees: Stephanie Horton, Douglas McNeely, and Nari Ward. They join six additional new members who have become trustees since 2020: Peter Boyce II, Richard Mumby, Elisa Nuyten, Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, Sue Hostetler Wrigley, and Neda Young.

“As we chart a path forward to the New Museum’s OMA-designed expansion, the diverse perspectives and deep commitment to the arts demonstrated by all of our new board members will be essential to shaping the Museum’s future,” said Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum.

In addition to appointing these new members to the Board, the New Museum has also named the late Toby Devan Lewis as an Honorary Trustee in Memoriam, recognizing her decades of outstanding service to the Museum. Lewis served on the Board of Trustees for twenty-seven years, indelibly shaping the New Museum and impacting the lives of countless artists and visitors. Lewis’s steadfast support for women and emerging artists in particular helped launch careers and reshape art world norms. The New Museum is honored to name its forthcoming OMA-designed building for Lewis in gratitude for a lifetime of support, and has created the title of Honorary Trustee in Memoriam to commemorate Lewis’s exemplary service in perpetuity.

“The legacy of Toby Devan Lewis’ enthusiasm and dedication to the New Museum will continue to guide the institution in the years to come and we are gratified to recognize her in memoriam as an Honorary Trustee,” said James-Keith Brown, President of the New Museum’s Board of Trustees. “I look forward to working with all our new board members who bring significant expertise in finance, entertainment, and technology to the Board during this important new phase.”

Stephanie Horton is a leader in the global luxury and fashion industry, and currently serves as Senior Director of Global Consumer Marketing and Strategy for Commerce at Google. Horton currently serves on The Advisory Boards of NYU Stern Fashion/Luxury MBA, The Black in Fashion Council, and McMullen Boutique. She serves on the Board of Directors for Farfetch where she chairs the ESG committee, the Board of Directors of Three Hills Capital Partners and two of their core investments FaceGym and Tomorrow, and the Board of Directors for NeueHouse/Cultureworks. She is Co-Founder of the organization Fashion Tech Connects, which connects female college students of color with fashion and technology industry internships.

Douglas McNeely is a Managing Director and Partner with The Carlyle Group, where he is responsible for managing the firm’s Platinum Investors. He previously served as a Managing Director at BlackRock, where he co-founded the BlackRock Impact Opportunities Fund, which was a private markets investment fund designed to invest in communities of color across the United States. He has formerly held a number of Trustee positions for non-profit organizations and currently serves as a Trustee of Duke University Perkins Library Board, and is also a Trustee of The Painted Turtle, which is an organization that focuses on children with serious medical conditions.

Nari Ward is an internationally acclaimed artist known for his sculptural installations composed of found materials. By re-contextualizing discarded consumer goods, Ward creates thought-provoking juxtapositions that address social and political issues surrounding race, poverty, and consumer culture. In addition to his 2019 New Museum exhibition “Nari Ward: We the People,” recent solo exhibitions of his work have been organized by institutions including Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan, Italy (2022); Vilcek Foundation, New York, NY (2022); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO (2020); among many others. The artist’s work was also included in the New Museum’s 2021 group exhibition “Grief and Grievance.”
