Portland Museum of Art announces Elizabeth Cartland as new Director of Development
Cartland comes to the PMA from the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts.

PORTLAND, ME.- Elizabeth “Liz” Cartland has been named Director of Development at the Portland Museum of Art. Cartland will be responsible for managing the museum’s fundraising staff, overseeing the implementation of a major gifts program, managing an overall strategy of annual leadership giving programs, and acting as lead fundraiser for the institution. She will join the staff in February.

“Liz Cartland is a skilled fundraiser and experienced manager who will bring leadership and energy to our Development Department,” said PMA Director Mark H.C. Bessire. “We are excited to have Liz join our team as we work to develop a culture of philanthropy at the PMA.”

Cartland comes to the PMA from the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, where she was the Director of Annual Giving and Philanthropy Officer since 2008 and oversaw the $2 million annual giving program. Cartland was responsible for the East India Marine Associates, a high-level membership program for annual donors of $2,500 and above, the PEM Annual Fund, and most recently, the membership program. She also oversaw a pool of major gift prospects and the museum’s stewardship activities. Additionally, Cartland managed patron programming, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and potential donors and worked closely with PEM’s volunteer leadership boards. Prior to joining PEM, she was the Senior Development Officer for Major Gifts at Joslin Diabetes Center and the Development Officer for Patron Programs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Cartland received her M.B.A. from Boston University with a focus on Public and Non-Profit Management. During that time, she consulted Year Up and the Boston Dance Alliance, assisting in developing annual giving plans and strategies for corporate partnerships. Cartland also volunteers as a Class Agent for both Bowdoin College and the Loomis Chaffee School.

Cartland will join the Development Department alongside William Cary, Director of Leadership Gifts and Planned Giving; Christi Razzi, Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations; Sophia Mendoza, Database Administrator and Information Specialist; Julie Davidson, Data Coordinator; and Anne Buckwalter, Development Coordinator.
