NEW YORK, NY.- On Tuesday, February 5, Swann Galleries will auction an outstanding assortment of Vintage Posters that includes skiing and other winter sports images, Art Nouveau examples by the most well known artists of that era, Judaic-themed and Hebrew posters, and other visually appealing highlights.

The sale opens with more than 140 posters by the most celebrated Art Nouveau artists. There are exquisite female forms by Alphonse Mucha, such as a pair of decorative panels of Fruit and Flower, 1897 (estimate: $15,000 to $20,000); his posters for Job rolling papers, 1896 and Salon des Cent, 1896, in a deluxe edition on vellum, signed and numbered by the artist ($20,000 to $30,000 each); and Moët & Chandon / Grand Crémant Impérial, 1899 ($10,000 to $15,000).

Toulouse-Lautrec highlights are Jane Avril, shown on stage with her petticoats flying, 1893 ($40,000 to $60,000) and Aristide Bruant dans son Cabaret, an iconic image of the performer in his black cape and red scarf, 1893 ($60,000 to $90,000).

Other popular fin-de-siècle images include Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen’s three cats begging for milk, Lait pur Stérilisé, 1894 ($12,000 to $18,000); Roger Jourdain’s Aérodrome de Vichy, 1909 ($6,000 to $9,000); a rare variant of Jules Cheret’s Théatre de la Tour Eiffel, 1893 ($2,000 to $3,000); and numerous American magazine posters for Harper’s and others by William Bradley, Edward Penfield and Louis J. Rhead.

From a different era is a run of Saturday Evening Post promotional posters reproducing the magazine’s recognizable covers.

Featured among the Judaic posters are three variations of Alfred F. Burke’s circa 1917 design for the Jewish Relief Campaign, which employ an allegorical figure of America offering her bounty to Jewish refugees ($4,000 to $6,000 and $5,000 to $7,500); Josef Foshko’s posters for the Jewish Welfare Board, 1918 ($3,000 to $4,000 each); Maccabiah by an unknown artist, promoting the 1932 Maccabi Games in Tel Aviv ($3,000 to $4,000); and a Yiddish version of a U.S. War Bonds poster showcasing the Statue of Liberty, 1943 ($1,500 to $2,000).

Choice ski images include rare and wonderful posters for the annual Dartmouth Winter Carnival, dating back to T.N. Joanethis’s 1938 design ($3,000 to $4,000) and through Fred Scribner’s 1958 image ($2,000 to $3,000); in addition to Dwight Clark Shepler’s Sun Valley/ Idaho/ New York Central System, 1940 ($3,000 to $4,000) and Sun Valley / Ketchum, Idaho, circa 1940 ($10,000 to $15,000); Sascha Maurer’s Lake Placid / In the Adirondacks, circa 1935 ($3,000 to $4,000), Flexible Flyer/ The Manor House, circa 1935 ($2,000 to $3,000) and Let’s Go Skiing! / Use the New Haven R.R., 1936 ($2,000 to $3,000).

From other countries are Canada Welcomes U.S. Citizens / No Passports, 1940 ($1,200 to $1,800); Emil Cardinaux’s Jungfrau – Railway, circa 1928 ($1,200 to $1,800); Theodoro’s Sports d’Hiver dans les Vosges, 1929 ($2,000 to $3,000); and Hugo Laubi’s St. Moritz, 1952 ($2,000 to $3,000).

Fine art aficionados will no doubt enjoy a select group of signed exhibition posters for artists such as Keith Haring at Leo Castelli ($400 to $600); Willem de Kooning at Seattle Art Museum, 1976 ($500 to $750); Roy Lichtenstein at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1995 ($500 to $750); Man Ray at Gallerie de Varenne ($300 to $400) and Andy Warhol ($600 to $900).

The sale concludes with a selection of Mather Work Incentive posters and classic international advertisements promoting travel, tobacco, liquor and more.
The auction will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 5; and continue after a lunch break at 2:00 p.m.

The posters will be on public exhibition at Swann Galleries Thursday, January 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, February 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, February 2, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.; and Monday, February 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
