LINCOLN, MASS.- DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum presents Among from with Andrew Witkin: PLATFORM 11, the eleventh project in the PLATFORM series. Boston-based artist Andrew Witkin works with furniture, text, and various common objects to underscore the poetic in everyday life. Witkin collects, arranges, and organizes things—skills pulled directly from his day job as a gallery director and curator—to further blur the boundaries between art and life, and probe the futility of such distinct categories.

As part of the ongoing PLATFORM series, in which artists are invited to present work which responds to deCordova’s unique site and spaces, Witkin will create an installation in deCordova’s fourth-floor Foster galleries—a small cluster of spaces that were once part of the summer home of the Museum’s namesake and founder Julian de Cordova. The installation will feature groupings of Witkin’s signature furniture pieces, arrangements of his personal collections, and displays of his photography and text-based works that collectively explore the layered histories of the space—from home to museum.

“The opportunity to exhibit at the deCordova, at this point in its programming is a true honor.” notes Witkin, “I hope that the project can stand tall with what else is on view, what else I have done and how Mr. de Cordova originally inhabited the space. In a way, the exhibition collapses and expands time, function, and the aesthetics embedded in the space.”

At first glance, the exhibition might appear as a theatrical set, a Minimalism-inspired showroom, or perhaps—with a bit more imagination—some vague form of a waiting area/lecture hall/back office combination. As such, the overall presentation is both familiar and unusual. It hints at Witkin’s desire to create a sense of deep ambiguity as viewers grapple with their ability to truly know a thing in full, be it a room or an object.

Andrew Witkin (b. 1977) has an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to being an active artist, he serves as Gallery Director at the Barbara Krakow Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston, and splits his time between Boston, Massachusetts and Sanbornton, New Hampshire. Witkin’s work has been featured in a number of group exhibitions in New England including the 2008 Foster Prize exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, of which he was the Prize recipient, but also as far afield as Beirut, Damascus, and Japan.
