NEW YORK, NY.- The first of Spink’s Spring coin auctions will take place in New York and is the eagerly awaited sale of Ancient Coins: Featuring the Christopher “Kit” Reed Collection on the 21st March 2017. This sale abounds in some of the most beautiful examples of ancient coins to come on the market in some time. Not only are the coins very visually appealing, but they are also extremely rare and valuable.

To immediately catch the eye is lot 14, a Sicily. Himera. AR Drachm, ca. 550/540-515 BC. The coin fittingly shows a Cock advancing right within beaded circle. A beautiful motif considering that 2017 is the year of the rooster in the Chinese Zodiac calendar. It is extremely fine and will undoubtable cause great uproar and furious bidding in the auction room on the 21st. Lot 14, estimated $1,500 – 2,000

Another Sicilian coin of note is lot 16, another attractive piece. It is a Sicily. Messana (as Zankle). AR Drachm, ca. 500-493 BC. Showing on the obverse a Dolphin leaping left, DANKLE below, within sickle-shaped band representing the city's harbor. Good Very Fine. Lot 16, estimated: $3,000 – 3,500

Lot 21 is also sure to set the room ablaze with bidding from the phones, internet and room. It is a Thrace. Abdera. AR Tetradrachm, ca. 460-444 BC. Magistrate: Kallidamas. Bearing the king of the beasts on its obverse, a Griffin, seated left atop tunny, raising its right paw, magistrate's name around. Good very fine. Lot 21, estimated: $1,500 – 2,000

Last but by no means least, lot 78 must be mentioned. An AV Stater from Carthage, ca. 350-320 BC. Showing the grain-wreathed head of Tanit left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace with 9 pendants, and a Horse standing right on single line, pellet triplet before its front fetlock adorning the reverse. A superb example of this rare and beautiful coin. Lot 78, estimated: $5,000 – 6,000

Spink’s New York office will also be having two other numismatic auctions in March:

• The Numismatic Collector’s Series Sale, 22nd March
• The Rauf Al Mannai Collection: Coins, 23rd March
