NEW CITY, NY.- The Rockland County Art in Public Places Committee announced the dedication of Art Garden in the Park, a sculptural installation by Tom Holmes, situated at the entrance to Zebrowski-Morahan Demarest Kill Park at 57 New Hempstead Road in New City.
A dedication ceremony, presided over by Rockland County Executive Ed Day, will take place on Monday, October 19th at 11:00 a.m. at the site.
Comprised of nine works, with a 20-foot high enameled-steel sculpture as the focal point, Art Garden in the Park represents the artists vision of a welcoming and serene space for the public to experience the surrounding landscape and the settings flora and fauna. Two benches and a chess table with small stools, all made of bluestone and steel, are anchored by a pair of burnt wood lanterns and a larger tower lantern which are made of steel and cedar using an ancient Japanese burnt wood technique for preserving and finishing wood that turns the surfaces inky black.
The central sculpture, an abstract work called Rising Expectations, soars above the space and signifies the artists vision of the future moving forward and reaching for greater heights. Dynamic and bold, it is painted in a bright, creamy orange the original paint for the iconic 1974 Volkswagen Beetle and provides a burst of color against the ever-changing landscape of the park.
A graduate of the Crane School of Music with a degree in music theory, Tom Holmes has also studied ancient instrument construction. He works in stone, metal, wood, light and even ice. His art has been exhibited widely at museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum in Chicago, the Amos Eno Gallery in Brooklyn, the J. Cacciola Gallery in Bernardsville, New Jersey, the Bethel Woods Museum in Bethel, New York and the Garrison Art Center and Boscobel House and Gardens, both in Garrison, New York.
