DALLAS, TX.- The accomplishments of the Chicago Bulls during the 1990s reflected one of the most dominant runs in the history of the NBA.
The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have won more NBA championships, but what the Bulls did by winning six championships in eight seasons borders on the absurd. The team had everything, including brilliant coaching from Phil Jackson and lineups loaded with stars, but the stretch of dominance was primarily fueled by the player many consider the greatest of all time: Michael Jordan.
Upon entering the league, Jordan's popularity among fans and subsequently, collector demand for his memorabilia soared like His Airness on the way to the rim. The next must-have item for the most serious of Jordan and basketball collectors: a 1992-93 Michael Jordan Game-Worn Chicago Bulls Uniform that will be in play May 16-18 in Heritage's Spring Sports Catalog Auction. Two independent authenticators have photo-matched this jersey and shorts as having been worn by Jordan in 17 games during the 1992-93 season, and on the October 18, 1993 cover of Sports Illustrated.
"For all of his countless individual accolades, Michael Jordan's greatest accomplishment is delivering championships for the Bulls," says Chris Ivy, Heritage's Director of Sports Auctions. "Only five teams in the history of the NBA have won three or more championships in a row, and the Bulls did it twice, with Jordan leading the way. This uniform is the only known example of which we are aware to be photo-matched from any of the first three championship seasons.
"During that season, he clearly was the league's best player he led the NBA in scoring for the seventh straight year, was named to the All-NBA First Team and the All-Defensive Team, and capped off the season by winning his third straight NBA Finals MVP Award. He stood above every player in the league that year, and accomplished much of his success that season in this uniform."
Another highlight of the hardwood is a trophy-level card that brings together three of the greatest players in NBA history: a 1980 Topps Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson - Scoring Leader, Rookie PSA Gem Mint 10. This beauty is one of just 24 among 16,034 submissions to earn the Gem Mint 10 grade. The significance of the players featured can not be overstated. Erving is largely credited with validating the game's transition from the ABA to the modern NBA, and Johnson and Bird are widely hailed as having forever changed the way basketball is consumed by fans, ever since their epic matchup in the 1979 NCAA championship game and throughout their extraordinary run as the biggest stars on the Lakers and Celtics, the league's most successful and iconic franchises.
Like so many of his 630 career home runs, a 1998 SkyBox E-X 2001 Ken Griffey Jr. (Essential Credentials Now) No. 10 PSA Mint 9 already is soaring into uncharted territory: With just under a month remaining, early bidding already has made it the first of his cards to reach six figures. This card, issued when the star known simply as "Junior" was the reigning American League MVP, has been called Griffey's best and is No. 4 among just 10 ultra-rarities that were inserted into 1998 SkyBox packs, tied with one other for the highest grade. The game's current leading star will take another swing at the spotlight in this auction in the form of a 2024 Transcendent Collection Shohei Ohtani ('60 Topps - Superfractor Auto) #60SFA-SO PSA Gem Mint 10, PSA/DNA Auto 10 - #'d 1/1. The most prolific two-way player since Babe Ruth has been as dominant at the auction block as he has at the plate and on the pitcher's mound see the 2024 Topps 50/50 Shohei Ohtani (Dynasty Black-Autographed Relic Card) #SOD1 PSA Mint 9, PSA/DNA Auto 9 - #'d 1/1that Heritage sold in March for $1,067,500. In addition to its exceptional grade, what makes this card an absolute must-have for the most serious collector is the fact that Ohtani has signed it twice: once in English and once in Japanese.
His prowess as both an ace pitcher and a prolific power hitter has inspired some to call Ohtani "the next Babe Ruth"
but the original also is part of this auction, starting with a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth No. 181 PSA NM-MT 8 card. The delicate detail of this card sets it apart the other three representations in the 1933 Goudey set of Ruth, who still is the game's most collectible star.
The "Sultan of Swat" is a dominant figure in the auction, with signed baseballs and additional cards, like the 1921 E121 American Caramel Co. Babe Ruth SGC VG-EX+ 4.5 - Pop One, One Higher and a 1923 W515-1 "Babe" Ruth (Hand Cut) No. 3 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher.
Another card from a beloved baseball hero is a Signed 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente Rookie No. 164 PSA VG 3, Auto 7 from the Pittsburgh Pirates legend's rookie campaign. Known for his humanitarian efforts that matched his exemplary performance on the field, Clemente's life was cut short in a plane accident while on a humanitarian aid mission to Nicaragua, after which baseball waived its standard five-year waiting period that was required for enshrinement in the Hall of Fame and added him to its 1973 class. Also offered is one of just four PSA-graded examples of a 1948 Bowman Baseball Wax Pack, PSA NM 7 that falls into the white-hot subgenre of unopened sets. Adding to the appeal and demand is the fact that the 1948 set was Bown's first, and paper rationing following the attack on Pearl Harbor temporarily brought the production of baseball cards to a complete halt, making the 1948 set a celebrated restart for the industry.
Other prized sets in the auction include, but are not limited to:
A 1986 Fleer Basketball PSA Gem Mint 10 Near Set (131/132) that does not include Jordan, but every included card, including Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, etc., carries a 10 grade
A 1986 Fleer Basketball PSA Gem Mint 10 Near Set (131/132)
A 1963 Topps Football Complete Set (170) that is ranked No. 2 Current Finest on the PSA Set Registry
A 1983 Topps Baseball PSA Graded Complete Set (794) - Ranked No. 2 Current Finest on the PSA Set Registry
The auction is overflowing with exceptional memorabilia, including a photo-matched 1967 Willie Mays Game-Worn San Francisco Giants Game Worn & Signed Jersey that the legendary Hall of Famer wore during his 16th season with the Giants. Ranked second on The Sporting News' list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players of the 20th Century," Mays is considered by many to be the most complete player of all time, the living embodiment of the "five tools" used to grade players.
Among the most timely lots in the auction is a 2023 Luka Dončić Game-Worn Dallas Mavericks Jersey, the very one in which one of the game's young superstars scored 50 points December 25, 2023, to launch his career total above the 10,000-point plateau. Dončić found himself in headlines across the league when the Mavericks traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers in February in the NBA's biggest blockbuster trade in recent years.
Olympic medals rarely reach public auction, and those that do often are many years or even decades removed from the years in which they were won, making a 2024 Paris Summer Olympics Gold Medal Presented to Netherlands 4x400M Mixed Relay Team Member Eugene Omalla an absolute auction rarity. Omalla was part of the Dutch team that also included Lieke Klaver, Isaya Klein Ikkink and Femke Bol to upset the United States squad that had just established a new world record during the event's heats. Omalla ran the opening leg and is the current African indoor record holder in the men's 400 meters. The offered medal is believed to be the first from the 2024 Paris Olympics ever offered by a major auction house.Championship rings are among the most popular sports collectibles, and this auction includes dozens. Among the best is a 1968 New York Jets Super Bowl III Championship Ring that was awarded to running back Matt Snell, who lined up in the same backfield as quarterback Joe Namath in the game in which Broadway Joe famously guaranteed a win for his AFL Jets over the NFL's vaunted Baltimore Colts. New York delivered on its brash quarterback's promise with a 16-7 victory, a decision that announced the ability of AFL teams to compete with NFL heavyweights just two years after the leagues merged. The AFL's legitimacy is secured in the words that appear on the top of the ring: New York Jets World Champions.
Also in play is a dazzling Player Model of a 2022 Golden State Warriors NBA Championship Ringthat celebrated the team's title at the end of the 2021-22 season. This is a top-tier "Type A" example that is identical to those earned by the players. The manufacturer's cost was a staggering $108,000. It features approximately 16 carats of both yellow and white diamonds set in yellow gold, symbolizing the team's 16 playoff victories en route to winning the title. Among its most spectacular features is a hidden compartment that can be accessed by rotating the top of the ring, revealing Larry O'Brien championship trophies a trove numbered to reflect the number won by each player who received a ring (this example includes four).
