Elevating Transit Design into Public Art: Su Li's Harmonious Fusion of Aesthetics and Functionality

Su Li is not just a designer—she is a visual storyteller, a strategist who wields shape, color, and form like a painter crafting a masterpiece. A multidisciplinary creative specializing in product design, graphic packaging, and systemic branding, she first captured the design world’s attention by winning the first prize in Dieline Award for beauty and health packaging in 2021. Her work transcends mere utility, transforming functional objects into emotionally resonant experiences.

Now, with her visionary concept design of Metrolink—Southern California’s sprawling commuter rail network—Su Li has once again proven that design is not just about solving problems, but about elevating public spaces into realms of artful communication.

Public infrastructure is more than steel and concrete; it is the circulatory system of a city, a living canvas where design must balance clarity with beauty. Metrolink’s previous identity suffered from visual fragmentation, struggling to distinguish itself from Los Angeles’ similarly named Metro system. Su Li approached this challenge not as a mere branding exercise, but as an opportunity to redefine Metrolink as a cultural connector—a thread weaving through the vibrant, diverse tapestry of LA’s communities.

Her conceptual anchor? The word “LINK.”

By distilling the essence of connection into a cohesive visual language, Su Li transformed Metrolink from a utilitarian transit service into a dynamic cultural symbol. Her design system—spanning signage, digital platforms, and wayfinding—doesn’t just guide passengers; it engages them, turning every journey into an intuitive, almost poetic experience.

One of the project’s most striking achievements is its fluidity across mediums. From station signage to mobile apps, Su Li’s design maintains a consistent artistic voice. Digital interfaces mirror the physical world’s clarity, ensuring passengers move between touchpoints without friction. In an era where public transit must rebuild trust, this harmony isn’t just convenient—it’s necessary.

Great transit design doesn’t just serve a city—it represents it. Su Li’s Metrolink is no longer just a way to get from point A to B; it’s a bold statement in Southern California’s visual landscape. The refreshed identity fosters civic pride, turning commutes into reflections of accessibility, efficiency, and shared community values.

Su Li’s work exemplifies design at its highest form—a discipline where logic meets artistry. She doesn’t just create pretty visuals; she restructures how people interact with their environment. The Metrolink rebrand is more than a success—it’s a testament to how intentional, artful design can transform public systems into experiences that are not just functional, but beautiful.

In a world where infrastructure is often an afterthought, Su Li reminds us: design is the silent language of cities, and when done right, it speaks to the soul.
